In order to become a security guard or door supervisor at nightclubs, pubs, discotheques and other entertainment avenues, you need to obtain an SIA license. There are certain qualifications necessary before you can take SIA training. You must be over 18 years of age, and pass both an identity check and criminal records check. For door supervisors, SIA training involves a conflict management module and a physical intervention skills module, as well as ‘common’ and ‘core’ modules. The successful completion of the training means you obtain an SIA license for a number of years, and can seek employment with any security agency in the UK.
The compulsory modules involve the basics and fundamentals of the role. This includes being aware of the law, health & safety, fire safety awareness and emergency procedures, such as evacuating a building. In addition, training in drugs awareness, licensing laws, arrest, recording incidents and crime scene preservation is also covered.
The SIA training also provides conflict management and physical intervention training. The former involves learning how to avoid conflict. Physical intervention teaches door supervisors how to disengage those in physical conflict without causing injury or pain, and how to escort people off the premises also without causing injury or pain.
Some SIA training institutes also provide first aid training for medical emergencies. This course conforms to all legal and medical standards established by official UK agencies, and covers a variety of emergency medical procedures.
